Why is Juri sitting on a tire in Street Fighter 6’s character select? The game’s director has an answer but it’s not what you’d think

This week, Capcom unveiled the first actual gameplay footage of Street Fighter 6’s most recently announced fighters, Juri and Kimberly. By way of a special showcase, the game’s director Takayuki Nakayama and producer Shuhei Matsumoto sat in during a Japanese broadcast to play a few rounds as the latest combatants and answer a few questions.

As part of this presentation, fans were able to see both world warriors on the character select screen, and Juri’s pose here piqued some interest from viewers as it has her squatting down and balancing on top of a large tire. This is an odd and seemingly out of character display for Juri, and when one of the co-hosts of the showcase asked why the choice to sit her on a tire was made, the game’s director had an answer — but it’s one you might not expect.

It’s clear that Capcom is injecting all kinds of references to other Street Fighter and Final Fight titles into Street Fighter 6, and one might think that the tire is alluding to another fighter or game. While it’s possible that this still might be the case, the actual reason why Juri is crouching on a tire is much simpler than that, according to Nakayama.

“I thought it’d be cool,” Nakayama explained (thanks to the translation of our very own Nick “MajinTenshinhan” Taylor). And… that’s it! That’s the explanation behind Juri’s character select screen pose.

Now, we do see something similar with Chun-Li in Street Fighter 6. When hovering over her on the character select screen the classic street fighter can be seen sitting on some luggage, which is a direct reference to an old piece of official Street Fighter artwork.

In terms of what a tire has to do with Juri, though, that remains unclear to me (and seemingly the rest of the community).

The logical tie we can make is that the tire is large and could be a reference to Abigail, whose scrapyard is confirmed to be a location in Street Fighter 6. However, Juri and Abigail don’t have any connections that we know of, at least not in previous Street Fighter games, so who knows?

I mean, Juri does ride a motorcycle, and she could be seen riding one in her Street Fighter 6 reveal trailer. That still doesn’t quite explain the character select screen pose, though, as that tire is clearly way too large for her bike.

Goal, hey! If the reason is indeed “it would be cool,” then I can live with that. As odd as it is, Juri’s animation there actually is quite cool.

With Juri being in a squatting position, we can actually see her balancing herself on top of the tire all while being lost in her phone. The slight shifts she makes with her legs to stay atop the tire look awesome, and though it’s subtle, it is a nice touch.

She’s also got a bit of a Spider-Man thing going on here with this pose, which is fitting considering her love of spiders.

As it stands right now, seven different characters have been revealed for Street Fighter 6. Ryu, Chun-Li, Jamie, Luke, Guile, Kimberly, and Juri are all set to be playable in Capcom’s upcoming title.

Street Fighter 6 is due out sometime in 2023. You can see Juri’s SF6 character select screen animation below courtesy of HiFight.
