The most popular character choices for Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 5’s Top 128 players at Evo 2022

Although there have been a handful of big majors in recent months, Evo 2022 served as the first time since the pandemic began where thousands of fighting game fans flocked from every corner of the globe to attend.

Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 5 were the 2 biggest games at Evo this year, and it was very interesting to see how the different regions have continued to develop during this extended time apart — and which characters they were using.

Out of the 2,100 and 1,300 players who signed up to compete in GGST and SF5 respectively at Evo, we managed to grab the character statistics for the top 128 competitors to take a look at what was going on in the brackets beyond just wins and losses.

Starting out with Guilty Gear, fans probably won’t be surprised to see Ramlethal as the most popular pick of the weekend with 11 players maining her, but interestingly, the highest any of them reached in the end was 25th place.

Despite being used by 3 of the top 16 at the event, Zato-1 was only the 4th most picked behind Leo and Chipp.

Overall, Strive actually saw a nice spread of characters used throughout the upper bracket with every fighter getting picked at least 3 times.

That is except for the 2 who didn’t see play this far in at all between Testament and Baiken — the newest DLC characters before Bridget.

There was probably some worry going into Evo that it might turn into a Ram and Leo festival, and even though they did show up more, the game saw strong representation all around.

As for Capcom’s sole mainstage title, SF5 also continued its trend of the past year with really nice character diversity all around too.

We were a bit surprised to see Laura come out on top in terms of popularity, however, with 8 players maining her at the tournament where only XSET|iDom and IQ Mira were able to reach at least the top 16.

Alex also saw probably the best representation we’ve ever seen for the big guy at a SF5 major, which is cool to see after all this time.

Some of the deadliest threats of the past like Karin, Cammy, Urien and Akuma were not nearly as prevalent as they used to be, but they were still around.

SF5 fans were likely wondering how much Luke we were going to see at Evo since he’s generally considered best in the game, and while the newcomer certainly did alright for himself, he was used as a secondary pick almost as much as he was mained.

In total, 40 of the game’s 45 characters saw main play during the upper brackets where only Dan, Akira, Nash, Falke and Poison were basically left out.
